not the horse’s job to prepare itself

Just because I ran 2 marathons does not mean I can sit back and do nothing before the next one.  Training is not something that stays, it must be kept up.

what things mean

In my books, forward does not mean the horse is still going. Forward denotes quality and extra try.  Not just letting you do things to them.
